Frequently Asked Questions
-
Every child experiences challenges from time to time, but counselling may be helpful if emotions, behaviours, or life changes are affecting your child’s daily life, relationships, school, or overall well-being. We also support children and teens through preventative care, helping them build healthy coping skills before challenges become overwhelming.
-
Yes. We believe parents and caregivers are an important part of the therapeutic process. Depending on your child’s age and needs, we provide regular parent check-ins, collaboration, and practical strategies to support progress at home while respecting your child’s therapeutic space.
-
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know you, learn about your concerns, and discuss how we can best support your family.
For play therapy:
The process begins with a parent or caregiver consultation. During this session, you’ll meet with your child’s counsellor to share your concerns, discuss your child’s developmental history, strengths, and current challenges, and ask any questions you may have. This conversation helps us understand your child’s unique needs before meeting with your child. Your child’s first play therapy session will then focus on building a safe, trusting relationship through play and allowing them to become comfortable in the therapy space.
For teen counselling:
The initial session is typically with the teen and their counsellor. Together, we’ll talk about what has brought them to counselling, explore their goals, and answer any questions they have about the counselling process. We focus on creating a comfortable, non-judgemental environment where teens can begin building trust and feel safe sharing at their own pace. When appropriate, parents or caregivers may be included for part of the session to provide background information and collaborate on treatment goals while respecting the teen’s privacy and confidentiality.
-
The length of counselling is different for every child, teen, and family. It depends on each person’s goals, strengths, and the challenges they are working through.
For play therapy:
Play therapy is most effective when children have the time to build a trusting relationship with their counsellor and work through their experiences at their own pace. While every child is unique, the average number of sessions needed is 20-30. Some may require fewer sessions for specific concerns, while others with more complex needs may benefit from longer term support. Throughout the process, we regularly review progress with parents and adjust recommendations as needed.
For teen counselling:
The length of teen counselling varies depending on the individual’s goals and needs. Some teens find that 6-12 sessions are enough to work through a specific concern or life transition, while others benefit from ongoing support over a longer period. Counselling is a collaborative process and together we’ll regularly discuss progress and determine what feels most helpful moving forward.

We are currently awaiting registration with the BCACC. While this process is underway, we are offering discounted counselling rates to help make services more accessible.
Once registration is complete, clients will be able to submit receipts for reimbursement through their extended health benefits, where coverage is available.
Please note that every extended health plan is different. Coverage amounts, eligible providers, and reimbursement requirements vary between insurance companies and individual plans. We recommend contacting your benefits provider before your first appointment to confirm your coverage for services provided by a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC).

Sliding scale spots are limited and based on availability. If cost is a concern, please reach out to us to discuss your situation. We are happy to let you know if a sliding scale spot is currently available or help you explore other options and resources if needed.

We kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice will be subject to the full session fee.
We understand that children can become ill unexpectedly. If your child is unable to attend their play therapy session due to illness within the 24-hour cancellation window, the appointment will be converted to a parent consultation. This allows us to continue supporting your child's progress by discussing strategies, reviewing goals, and addressing any questions or concerns you may have.
For teen counselling and parent sessions, appointments can be moved to a secure virtual session if attending in person is not possible. This flexibility helps ensure continuity of care while accommodating unexpected circumstances.
