Helping Children Grow Through the Language of Play
Children don't always have the words to explain what they're thinking or feeling. Instead, they communicate through play. Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT) is an evidence-based approach that provides children with a safe, accepting environment where they can express themselves, process difficult experiences, and develop the emotional skills they need to thrive.
At Strong Roots Centre, we believe that every child has an innate capacity for growth and healing. Through a trusting relationship with a trained play therapist, children are given the space to explore their emotions, build confidence, strengthen resilience, and develop healthier ways of coping with life's challenges.
What is Child-Centred Play Therapy?
Child-Centred Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate form of counselling designed for children, typically between the ages of 2 and 12. Rather than expecting children to sit and talk about their feelings like adults, CCPT recognizes that play is a child's natural language and toys are their words.
During sessions, children lead the play while the therapist follows with empathy, curiosity, and acceptance. Carefully selected toys allow children to safely express thoughts and emotions, work through experiences, practice problem-solving, and gain a greater sense of confidence and self-understanding.
Rather than directing or "fixing" a child's behaviour, the therapist builds a secure therapeutic relationship that supports the child's natural ability to heal, grow, and make sense of their world.
How Can Play Therapy Help?
Child-Centred Play Therapy can support children experiencing:
Anxiety and excessive worries
Depression and low mood
Grief and loss
Emotional regulation challenges
Behavioural concerns
Family changes such as separation or divorce
Trauma and stressful life experiences
Social difficulties and friendship concerns
Low self-esteem
School-related challenges
Life transitions
Big emotions that feel difficult to express
Play therapy can also benefit children who simply need additional support developing confidence, resilience, emotional awareness, and healthy coping skills.
What Happens During a Play Therapy Session?
Each session takes place in a specially designed playroom with carefully selected toys, art materials, games, sand, and creative activities that encourage expression and exploration.
Children are free to choose how they play while the therapist provides a warm, accepting, and emotionally safe environment. Through the therapeutic relationship and the play process, children gradually work through difficult emotions and experiences in ways that are meaningful to them.
Every child's journey is unique. Some children express themselves through imaginative play, while others may choose art, storytelling, movement, or sensory activities. There is no "right" way to participate.
The Importance of Parent Involvement
Parents and caregivers are an essential part of the therapeutic process.
Play therapy begins with a parent consultation to better understand your child's strengths, history, and current concerns. Throughout therapy, we schedule regular parent consultations to discuss progress, answer questions, and provide strategies that support your child's emotional growth at home.
While your child's play sessions remain a private and protected space, collaboration with parents helps strengthen the benefits of therapy and supports lasting change.
How Long Does Play Therapy Take?
Because healing happens through the therapeutic relationship, play therapy is not typically a short-term intervention.
Most children benefit from approximately 15–30 sessions, although this varies depending on their age, goals, and individual needs. Some children require fewer sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Progress is reviewed regularly, and recommendations are made collaboratively with families.
Our Philosophy
At Strong Roots Centre, we believe children grow best when they feel safe, accepted, and deeply understood.
Rather than focusing solely on changing behaviours, Child-Centred Play Therapy helps children develop emotional resilience, confidence, self-awareness, and healthy relationships from the inside out. By nurturing strong roots today, we help children build the foundation they need to thrive throughout their lives.
